I May Have a Bit of an Obsession.......



So I am realizing that I may have a bit of an obsession....I've purchased all of these books within the last two weeks, based on feedback about them from some of you!! And about the language arts books--I know I don't teach language arts at all right now but I do want to stay on top of things in case I do (and I probably will at some point, I imagine). I have been reading a little bit of each book when I can, that way I can finish several at once (that works best for my attention span!).

That being said......any recommendations on any professional development books that I should read??? :)

    So ... what does it say about me if I have read most of the books in your pile? (... and the ones I haven't read, I will put on my wishlist.)

    I would recommend reading Teaching with Intention because it really makes you think about the way that you teach.

    Is that Math Worksheets ... Dendrites book a must read? It is one I don't have.

      I am really enjoying "Teaching with Intention"!! The math worksheet one is not as good as I was hoping, but there are still some great ideas in there. I was looking for several fresh ideas and information but I felt that a lot of it was stuff I've seen/heard before. I'm glad I bought it though because, like I said, there are good ideas in it.

    One of my "go to" books is Teaching with Love and Logic. I have read it so many times. I have pages dogeared and highlighted and I go through those pages whenever I start feeling frustrated.

    I love Comprehension Connections by Tanny McGregor--a book I found while blogging!

    I'm like you... I read a blog, one click on Amazon, read a blog... you know the system! Of course, I can't retire until I'm 83 due my book purchases, but I hate thinking there is something I should know!

      This is what I was going to recommend. We use Comprehension Connections with all our K's and it's an AMAZING tool to help the kids with different comprehension skills.

      I'm also obsessed with Daily 5 and hope to add the CAFE pieces next year :)

    You have a few book titles that I need to write down...right now I am reading Strategies that Work..it focuses on building comprehension.

    Wow - I have all of those as well - great choices :) I was going to suggest Strategies that Work by Stephanie Harvey (I'm rereading it right now and loving it!), but I see that it's already been recommended!

    Here's some more to add to your list- Mosaic of Thought by Keene. Reading it now with my school book club; it is a great resource for Reader's Workshop. If you're into theory behind teaching reading, try To Understand, also by Keene. I also highly reccomend Comprehension Connections-great lessons for inferring! :) Read On!

    This obsession is in no way unique to you! I have a problem; I own to many books. I own hundreds of books all varying in subjects. My top genres seem to be teaching, cook/baking books and historical Christian fiction. It started when I was real young and has just grown.

    Have you found any books that you like specifically for teaching math? I"m a first year teacher and I teach a some kiddos that struggle. I'd love to focus on improving my teaching there! (There are SO many reading professional development books out there - I just can't find any that are great for upper elementary math! I'm working on creating math notebooks inspired by you and other bloggers over the summer to increase engagement and accountability!)
