Monday Made It: Subitizing

Yay! It's time for......

This week, I made dot plates for subitizing:

I know you may be thinking, "Well, duh, easy enough to make and no explanation needed." Well, that is true, BUT I made a little presentation on the plates that I hope you watch and enjoy! :) And, please ignore my 1:30 a.m. voice............ :)

There you have it!! And this is not just a Kinder or 1st grade thing--it's never a bad thing to work on strengthening number sense! Go make some dot plates!! To help you out a little, I am including a page of suggested dot arrangements. Click the pic below to download your freebie!

And that all leads me to Made It #2:

I just finished up this pack this morning and I am VERY excited to use it in my classroom! Here are some sample pages:

And a fun little craftivity!!

You can check out this pack in either store:

Happy Monday!! :)

  1. I was going to grab your arrangement sheet, but it's not available -- you maybe forgot to make it available to everyone with the link?

  2. I have never heard of this work subitizing and am not feeling very bright... I don't teach math so maybe that's way although I used to teach first. The plates/activities look cute tho!

    1. I'm sorry, Jessica! I admit that I was unfamiliar with the term until a few years ago, even though I have been subitizing on my own for as long as I can remember! We all do it to a certain degree. :) And I just typed a resonse similar to this to another blogger--I recommend searching some blogs or googling it because it is so fascinating to read about. It makes so much sense to teach it to kids and also makes you wonder why it is just now becoming so popular when the term alone has been around for many, many decades.

    1. Thanks, Brandee!! I recommend searching some blogs or googling it because it is so fascinating to read about. It DOES make so much sense and makes you wonder why it is just now becoming so popular when the term alone has been around for many, many decades.

  4. Love the subitizing plates. Have you seen the fun apps and powerpoints on subitizing?

    1. I've used a subitizing app or two before but haven't found one I love. Do you have any recommendations? And I have made a few PowerPoints (even included some in my I Can...Subitize pack) to practice subitizing. Making the PowerPoints is as easy as making the plates! Another quick, easy way to practice.

    2. Have you tried TeacherTipster's subitizing app? I can't use it because I don't have an iPad but I've heard it is good.

    1. Thanks for coming over, Matt!! I just checked out your blog and I am LOVING it so far!

And, yes, look up subitizing! It's something you likely already do without thinking about and is a vital thing for our kids to learn to do. There is great power in teaching them to subitize!

  8. Subitizing has been around for a long time but the Common Core is really pushing it into the foreground. If you have never tried it with kids, you should do it ASAP! It can make a huge difference in their development of number sense and leads to great things for multiplication and beyond.
