Sweet & Simple Saturday Post #2

Welcome back for week 2! I hope you enjoyed your week 1 freebie!! If you are unfamiliar with this series, Sweet & Simple Saturday posts are meant to share a nice, simple freebie with you. It will be a simple game, activity, craftivity, graphic organizer, etc. I plan on offering freebies for multiple grade levels and subject areas so they will be useful to lots of you out there!

Today's freebie is from my favorite subject--MATH! Just like last week's freebie..... ;) Don't worry--next week will be a different subject.

You may remember this picture from My Math Block Mini-Series post from a few months ago:

I used this game as part of a lesson one day and after that added it to our math station repertoire. I spruced up the original for you and included a few variations of the game in the file:

VERSION 1

Materials
  • a 10-sided die
  • egg carton (or other type of ten-frame)
  • counters (2 different colors or types)
  • recording sheet
Procedure:
  1. Roll the die.
  2. Place that number of counters in/on the ten-frame.
  3. Fill in the rest of the ten-frame using a different color or different type of counter.
  4. Complete the number sentence.

VERSION 2

Materials
  • egg carton (or other type of ten-frame)
  • counters (2 different colors or types)
  • recording sheet
Procedure:
  1. In this version, the students will determine how many more counters are needed to make 10 using a predetermined number. The predetermined number goes on the first blank and the missing addend goes in the box. Place the indicated number of counters in/on the ten-frame.
  2. Fill in the rest of the ten-frame using a different color or different type of counter.
  3. Complete the number sentence.

Easy peasy!! Your students will love it! :)

Click on the any of the above documents to download all of the recording sheets.

Enjoy your freebie!!!

It's that time again--Throwback Thursday!

Joining in the fun of this linky party again!

This linky party is meant to highlight some of your previous blog posts. Here is a throwback for you today--it is one of my favorite activities that we did when I was in 4th grade. I have turned the 3 original posts into 1 long post. It has lots of pictures so, don't worry, it will be tolerable. :)

*****************ORIGINAL POST*****************

PART 1
I remember making tessellations when I was in middle school. I remember it being such a neat project and really had fun creating it. I tried it for the first time last year with my 4th graders and they loved it! I started it last week with one of my classes (my other 2 classes will start next week) and they are looking great so far! I will post the finished products for you to see in a week or two when they are finished. Check them out:

We started out with a simple 4" x 4" square......

...and with a translation or two turned the square into irregular shapes!

The students translated their unique shape all over their paper to create a tessellation. (I put the original shape in the middle of the paper.)

Some traced a little more carefully than others...

"A snooty old woman" (as described by the creator)

I thought this one would be cool as a manta ray, but this student has other plans...

A personal fav!

I cannot wait to see the final products! Hope you enjoyed! :D

PART 2
Last Monday's Math Blog Hop I posted the beginning of a tessellation project my 4th graders started. Well, I am VERY PLEASED to present the finished products (well...at least several of them) to you! I didn't get a chance to take a before picture of all of them, but I do have a few.

This was such a fun project! I had a GREAT time teaching it and the kids had a GREAT time being so creative. :D

By the way, thanks to Abigail, I reached my 25 follower goal, so I will be announcing my first giveaway this week!! Stay tuned!!

PART 3
Here is the final installment of the tessellations--we are finally all finished:
